Definition:

Absence without leave (AWOL) is an unauthorized absence from the work place for which the employee does not receive pay.Supervisors may charge employees with absence without leave if the employee (1) fails to report for duty without prior approval; (2) has an unauthorized absence from the workplace during the workday; and (3) the employee does not follow the established notification procedures.

If the absence is later excused, the charge to AWOL on the time and attendance report must be changed to the appropriate leave category.
