Definition: An excused absence is an absence from duty authorized for administrative reasons without loss of pay and without charge to leave. The decision to grant an excused absence is a matter of supervisory discretion. Excused absence is commonly referred to as "administrative leave.
Common Uses (not all inclusive):
- Blood donation
- Occasional tardiness and brief absences
- Taking examinations for an employee's present position
- Voting and voter registration in limited circumstances
- Veteran's participation in a military funeral
- Attend meetings of professional organizations and other groups as long as it is determined that the Department or operating administration will benefit
- Participation in DOT sponsored and administers physical fitness programs and visits to health units
- Participation in volunteer activities sanctioned and sponsored by DOT
