Funeral Leave

Definition:
If an immediate relative dies as a result of an injury, disease, or wounds incurred while serving as a member of the Armed Forces in a combat zone, an employee may be granted up to 3 days of funeral leave to make arrangements for, or attend the funeral services of that family member.  This is a leave category separate from an employee's personal leave balances.

Leave for General Bereavement Purposes:

Full time employees may use up to 40 hours of sick leave per leave year for bereavement (funeral) purposes.  Bereavement purposes may include travel to and from a funeral, attending a funeral and/or making arrangements for a funeral.  An additional 64 hours may be used if the employee maintains a leave balance of at least 80 hours.

Combat Zone:
Those areas of combat as determined by the President in accordance with Internal Revenue Code 112.

 

Family Member or Immediate Relative: 

As defined for these purposes, family member or immediate relative includes:

  • spouse and parents thereof;
  • children including adopted children, and spouses thereof;
  • brothers and sisters, and spouses thereof;
  • parents; and
  • individual related by blood or affinity whose close association is the equivalent of a family relationship.
